Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a StaRN Instructor? Well, we had the pleasure of gaining insight from two incredible HWS StaRN instructors who shared their stories with us. 

Congratulations to our 47 StaRNs who completed their first year of nursing through our nurse residency program. To close out the program, they worked in teams to develop Evidence-Based Change projects to improve patient care, improve workflow, and make Sunrise Hospital, an HCA Healthcare facility, an even better hospital.

Imagine you are a new graduate RN contemplating that first step in your patient career. Like swimming, should you dive into the deep end of the pool now with all the fear and anxiety associated with it? Or should you try shallow water, continuing your learning process through program classes tailored to your needs and interests, ensuring your development and growth in a specialty you will love?

Our StaRN program is hiring! If you’re a registered nurse and would like to inspire the next generation of nurses in Richmond, Salt Lake City, or Las Vegas, consider becoming a StaRN instructor. No prior teaching experience is necessary!

StaRN – short for Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses – is designed to bridge the skills gap between new graduates and experienced nurses through a combination of classroom and hands-on specialty training.  Each cohort lasts 10 to 22 weeks depending on specialty, during which StaRN instructors act as mentors, educators, and preceptors to newly-licensed registered nurses.

Congratulations to StaRN graduate Brittany Nixon, RN, on being named an Employee of the Month at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center! Brittany completed the StaRN program in January 2018 and has made a positive impact on both the staff and patients at this HCA Healthcare facility on Florida’s Treasure Coast. 

“Growing up, I've always enjoyed caring for others – it all began with my grandmother whom I've cared for since the age of 8,” Brittany says. “She is truly my inspiration. For every patient I provide care for, I always refer back to my grandmother and remind myself to be the nurse that I would want my grandmother to have!”

As we near the end of National Apprenticeship Week, we'd like to take a moment to shift the focus to our StaRN learners and clinical instructors. Thank you for all of the important time and energy you put forth to make our program such a tremendous success. 

As we continue our National Apprenticeship Week celebration, we wanted to highlight the profound effect that StaRN - or Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses - has had on the healthcare and staffing communities. Most recently, the program was presented with the Elevate Award by the American Staffing Association, which recognizes the most innovative and effective work-based learning programs designed specifically for temporary and contract employees. 

This National Apprenticeship Week, we would like to recognize all of the StaRN learners and graduates for their commitment to providing quality patient care, as well as the clinical instructors who guided them along the way. StaRN, short for Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses, began as an opportunity to help meet the demand for specialty nurses in fields such as medical/surgical, telemetry, and critical care.

Our Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses (StaRN) program is looking for clinical instructors throughout the western United States. No teaching experience is necessary!
